Conceptual falling girl

Lots of us spend our time thinking about the past, letting the famous question "what if?" haunt us. Contrary to that, it's also common to hear about people focusing on their future, attempting to plan out each minuscule detail. Of course it's easier said than done but the present is where we should be directing our thoughts. It is the one location where we can be without regret or worry.

This image was taken for a school assignment, we were to copy the style of a photographer we admired. I chose Kristy Mitchell's series “Nocturn”. Kristy turned to photography while she was dealing with depression and as a coping measure to try and come to peace with the passing of her mother. Images from “Nocturn” are all self portraits and they are far from cheerful. They are all heavily edited sometimes even using double exposures to add to the creative content. While I was shooting my self portrait, I was reminded how different it is when it’s you under the microscope. To duplicate her lighting, I made sure that I would have lots of shadows but from enough angles to light up all of the papers that would be falling. In order to duplicate her work, I spend most of my time in photoshop trying to match her shadows and add hues to the whole image. As for the content, I chose to have myself falling because it represented the feeling of helplessness it must feel to have someone you love dying in front of you yet there is nothing you can do. The pages represent the only thing you’ll have left, your memories of that person.

Kristy's work is worth taking the time to see. Click here to be taken to her website.
